Today, Women Winning reaffirmed support for U.S. Senator Tina Smith and responded to the announced Senate candidacy of Jason Lewis.
“U.S. Senator Tina Smith is a focused, effective leader and, as demonstrated by her impressive 11 point margin of victory in the 2018 Midterm Election, Minnesotans are proud to have her representing them in Washington. She works tirelessly for the people of Minnesota and Minnesotans are eager to re-elect Senator Smith, a leader of integrity and principle, for a full term in 2020,” said Meggie Wittorf, Executive Director of Women Winning.
“Our state deserves better than the base, sexist comments Jason Lewis has repeatedly made about women. We deserve a Senator who respects and advocates for women, families, and people of all backgrounds and identities. There is already a misogynist in the Oval Office — we don’t need another in the U.S. Senate.”
As a radio shock jock, Jason Lewis complained that he can’t refer to women as “sluts”, called women voters “ignorant” and “non-thinking”, and said women vote only based on emotions. During his single term in the U.S. House, Lewis’ votes reflected his disregard for women, repeatedly voting to dismantle the Affordable Care Act, defund Planned Parenthood, eliminate Title X funding for reproductive healthcare clinics, and gut birth control protections.
Senator Smith has defended the Affordable Care Act and is working determinedly to lower the cost of healthcare for all Americans. She understands that women are equipped to make decisions about their own bodies and consistently votes to defend reproductive rights. From workforce development to opioid addiction prevention, Senator Smith gets things done for the people of Minnesota.
“Women Winning is proud to stand with Senator Smith and our coalition is excited to work for her reelection next fall,” said Wittorf.
