In line with national trends, Women Winning is proud to announce that 10 Women Winning endorsed candidates won their competitive primary elections and will advance to November’s general election. Mitra Jalali Nelson also won her special election for Saint Paul City Council’s Ward 4 seat, officially giving the Saint Paul City Council a pro-choice woman majority. In addition to these 10 candidates, Women Winning has already endorsed 52 other pro-choice women who will appear on the ballot in November. The organization plans to announce several more endorsements ahead of the General Election.

“Yesterday’s Primary Election saw unprecedented voter turnout — Minnesotans were energized to vote for a slate led by pro-choice women. With pro-choice women on ballot for the highest levels of office, we have historic opportunities in front of us: We must maintain Minnesota’s legacy as one of only four states currently represented by two pro-choice women U.S. Senators, Senator Amy Klobuchar and Senator Tina Smith. Additionally, we can elect the first woman to Congress from Congressional District 5, Representative Ilhan Omar. We are committed to keeping the momentum going into the general election and beyond,” said Meggie Wittorf, Interim Executive Director at Women Winning.

In yesterday’s Primary Election, 902,119 Minnesotans voted, making it the highest voter turnout since 1982.

2018 has seen record numbers of women running for office nationally and in Minnesota:

  • A record number of women have been endorsed by major parties to run for U.S. Senate.
  • 109 women have filed to run for Minnesota’s House of Representatives, which is up from 98 in 2016.
  • Minnesota’s Fifth Congressional District will be represented by a woman for the first time.
  • Minnesota has the chance to increase its pro-choice representation in Congress from one woman out of eight seats to three women.

Women Winning has been working for 36 years to elect pro-choice women to every level of public office, from Park Board to President. Its endorsement comes with strategic campaign guidance, training, and financial and grassroots support.
