Today, Women Winning announced the endorsement of seven pro-choice women running for Minneapolis and Duluth city council in 2021. The first of Women Winning’s 2021 endorsement program, these endorsements are just the beginning of the organization’s determined effort to elect pro-choice women to key local and municipal offices across Minnesota this year.
“We need our best advocates walking the halls of power at every level — from the U.S. Capitol to City Hall. Local and municipal elected officials make decisions that impact our families and communities every day, including on reproductive rights issues and much more, and pro-choice women’s voices must be represented,” said Meggie Wittorf, Women Winning President. “Women Winning is proud to launch our 2021 endorsement program with the endorsement of seven impressive, determined pro-choice women running for Minneapolis and Duluth city council. These leaders are stepping up to serve their communities, and we stand shoulder to shoulder with them on the path toward a government that better reflects the people it serves.”
Women Winning is proud to endorse seven pro-choice women running for city council:
Lisa Goodman, Minneapolis, Ward 7
Andrea Jenkins, Minneapolis, Ward 8
Emily Koski, Minneapolis, Ward 11
Linea Palmisano, Minneapolis, Ward 13
Terese Tomanek, Duluth, At-Large
Renee Van Nett, Duluth, District 4
LaTrisha Vetaw, Minneapolis, Ward 4
Following record-breaking electoral success in 2020 and increased representation at the state and federal level, pro-choice women continue to step up to run for office in key 2021 local and municipal elections. These levels of government play a significant role in ensuring access to reproductive rights and healthcare. County and city governments determine zoning for abortion-providing clinics and fund programs that promote reproductive health and support pregnant people and families. School Boards determine sexuality and consent education.
Women Winning’s endorsement program focuses on competitive districts for pro-choice women candidates with the goal of electing a truly representative government and creating a more equitable Minnesota. Women Winning will make endorsements throughout the year, and will continue organizing to ensure pro-choice women candidates have the support, training, and resources to run formidable campaigns and win in the August primary and November general elections.
