Joan Growe

Winner's Circle Member
Joan Growe served as the Minnesota Secretary of State from 1975 to 1979. She was the first woman in state history to win a statewide election without first being appointed to the position. In 1972, Joan ran for a seat in the Minnesota House of Representatives--at that time there was only one woman serving in that chamber. Joan was elected to the legislature along with five other women that year. Our newspaper warned, "The women are taking over." In 1984 Joan received the DFL endorsement as their candidate for the U.S. Senate, but was defeated in the election by Republican incumbment Rudy Boschwitz. Joan is currently a secretary and trustee and the Minneapolis Foundation and Director of the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs.
